Introduction to Counselling Children and Young People – More information

Aim:

This course aims to give counsellors the competences and basic skills required to begin working with Children and Young People (11-18).

Who is this for?

  • Counsellors already qualified to work with adults at Level 4 or above who want to start working with Children and Young People and begin to work towards more formal qualification in Counselling Children and Young People (11-18).
  • Trainee counsellors on an adult focused course at level 4 or above who wish to undertake some of their placement hours working with Children and Young People (11-18).

What will it cover:

The content is based on the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Stage 1 counselling children and young people curriculum (11-18).

It is a four-day course and will cover:

  • Communication with Young People
  • Child & Adolescent Development & Transitions
  • Mental Health & Young People
  • Risk Assessments
  • Child Protection & Safeguarding
  • Ethical & Professional practice (Ethics and the rights of the YP)
  • Working within the context of a counselling setting
  • Beginnings & Endings with Young People

At the end of the course there will be a 2000 word essay.

FAQ:

What qualifications do I need to do the Introduction to Counselling C&YP Course?
You need to be qualified as a counsellor to a minimum of Level 4 or be enrolled in a course at minimum level 4 and be about to undertake a placement with children.

Can I sign up for the Introduction and Diploma at the same time?
Yes. There is a discount if you apply for them both together. Alternatively, you can undertake the Introduction course and apply for the Diploma later.

Can I do the Introduction course, then sign up for the Diploma later?
Yes, you can. There is a discount for signing up for them both at the same time, but you can apply separately.

I have a learning need. Can I still access the course?
We will do everything we can to enable everyone to access the course. Please speak to us about your individual needs so we can discuss them and plan.

Where will the course be held?
The course will be in person and will be held at Wellspring House, 78 High Street, Starbeck, Harrogate, HG2 7LW.

Do I need some experience in counselling Children and Young People?
Some experience of being with Children and Young People would be an advantage, but we do not expect you to have experience in counselling Children and Young People.

Will I have to complete a placement?
No. You will only have to complete a placement on the Diploma course.
