Training outline
Sexual abuse is perhaps one of the most emotive and provocative phrases in the English language. Everybody has a view, often passionate, heartfelt, and visceral.
We need to slow down, dig deep, and remain curious. We need to think about the words we use, and use our heads as well as our hearts. And we need to treat all people – whether victims or perpetrators – as people worth doing business with.
The day will look at:
- Our values and our own responses to sexual harm.
- The extent and prevalence of sexual harm.
- The legislative framework and associated problems.
- The sexuality of sexual harm.
- Sexual harm and systems theory.
- Sexual harm in a digital world.
- Working with victims of sexual harm.
About the trainer
Sam is an experienced social worker who has worked in frontline local authority services for over 14 years.
In youth justice services, Sam supervised and supported young people convicted of sexual offences, and acted as an expert advisor to both the youth and crown courts. In addition to coordinating community risk management, Sam developed extensive experience in delivering interventions to young people. After returning to children and families social work, he has acquired more experience in working with young people as victims of sexual harm and with families affected by sexual abuse, and is involved in practice leadership and the development of new assessment and intervention models.
Sam qualified from Durham University in 2009 with a Masters in Social Work, has an additional Certificate in Systemic Social Work Practice with Children & Families, and is a qualified AIM3 assessor for young people who sexually harm.
Sam believes that both perpetrators and victims of sexual harm demand our respect, our professionalism, and the highest quality interventions that we can provide. This is the only way we will prevent future victims of sexual harm. This is why this matters, this is why Sam will talk about it at any opportunity, and this is why Sam cannot wait to talk about it with you.
